Penguin Craft for Bookworm Buddies 8/18

On Tuesday, August 18, we will create penguins during storytime. The supplies you will need are scissors, glue, black pen or marker, black and white paper, orange paper -OR- an orange crayon, marker or colored pencil, and something round for tracing (I used an old coffee can lid.)

Early Readers Book Club

Beginning in August, we will be adding an Early Reader’s Book Club to our regularly scheduled programming. This will be a program for children in grades K-2 who are learning to read independently. We will read an award winning or nominated story and create a book related project.

Our first meeting is this coming Monday, August 17th at 5:00 PM. We will meet on Facebook Live, and we will create a fun cat art project. For the project, the participants will need a sheet of construction paper (it can be whichever color they would like their cat to be) and a blank sheet of paper to make a background (preferably a different color than the first sheet of construction paper.) They will also need scissors and a variety of crayons, colored pencils or markers.

Just another quick rundown of how the points will work this year. For adults and teens: each book you read is worth 100 points, and each mission you complete is also worth 100 points.

The first 100 adults to read six books will win a Peotone Library Book tote.

Kids ages 0-12: every 100 minutes you read is worth 100 points, and each mission completed is also worth 100 points.

The program goal is to reach 1000 points by the end of the summer, but you are not required to stop at 1000 points. You can keep reading, and keep earning points.

Every 100 points earned can be traded in for a raffle ticket and entered into one of the prize drawings.

The Outdoors is Calling!

Just in time for spring, here are a few books that will hopefully inspire us to spend some time outside, especially as the weather gets a little warmer and the sun begins to shine!

The Hike by Alison Farrell is an excellent book about three girls who take to the woods, and spend the day exploring! Throughout the book, you’ll find helpful labels that identify the animal life and vegetation the girls pass along the way.
Two friends go exploring to find keepsakes to store in glass jars. They collect all kinds of objects like buttercups, feathers and heart-shaped stones. But the author adds some clever magical realism when it’s revealed that, “They collected things you might not think would even fit in a jar. But somehow, they did.” This is a sweet book, with great illustrations and a great lesson in friendship.
This wonderful book tells the story of a family who had to downsize to a small shack in the woods during the Great Depression. It helps us understand the strength, creativity and ingenuity it took to survive such a trying time in history. It is also a celebration of the little, universal joys that make life more bearable.
